Anne Blewett’s Tenacious attempt at the Race Across France

The world of cycling is no stranger to remarkable stories of perseverance and determination. Among those shining stars is Anne Blewett, a phenomenal female cyclist who, at the beginning of July 2023, embarked on an awe-inspiring quest – her second attempt at conquering the grueling Race Across France. For Women’s month, we felt it only fitting to dive into Anne’s journey, exploring her motivation, challenges, and invaluable experiences gained from participating in this epic race.

The Ultimate Challenge

Race Across France is an ultimate test of endurance and determination in the world of cycling. Organized by Van Rysel and created by Arnaud Manzanini, this challenging event spans over 2,500 kilometers, taking participants on a grueling journey through the breathtaking landscapes of France.

The race is a non-stop, single-stage event, demanding participants to push themselves to their physical and mental limits as they strive to conquer the demanding terrains and unpredictable weather conditions. With a relentless pursuit of the finish line, cyclists must face various obstacles and long stretches of road, showcasing their true grit and passion for the sport.

“Ultra endurance, self-supported races are probably the hardest races in the world. They test you in every way…you have to think fast and plan your moves every step of the way. Each competitor faces his or her own challenges, you might be lucky and everything goes your way in one race, but another race could just blow up in your face.”

The Race – Highs and Lows

2500kms…that’s a long way! Which of course means that in the never-ending hours of the race, there are bound to be highs as well as lows.  Anne’s race this year was her 2nd attempt at the event which meant that she has a goal based off of her 2022 attempt which unfortunately ended prematurely.

Out in the middle of nowhere, isolated, determined and exhausted all at the same time, it’s not hard to imagine that emotions (good and bad) must be felt in extremes.

“Your eyes take the photos, you drink in the beautiful scenery you see, the extraordinary things you witness.  You realize that no matter how many photos you take, none of them will be able to capture the true scene you have witnessed, and sometimes you don’t take photos because the picture in your mind is enough, it’s tucked away.”

In the end, Anne didn’t make the 10 day cut-off for the 2500km race…cutting her effort short at 1700kms.  That’s not to say that she did tick off a massive achievement, far outriding herself from a year ago.  Last year, Anne attempted this race for the first time but her race was riddled with challenges ranging from mechanicals, language barriers, altitude sickness and checkpoint issues.  Without letting last year’s event demotivate her…she returned this year to give it another bash, learning from her experience and better preparing for the challenge at hand.

“I know I didn’t get to the end, but I rode almost 1700 km and almost 22000m of climbing and I turn 60 in December. I will go back and finish the last section, for myself and my own personal goal.  I am happy I gave it my all, and it was my choices in my race that in the end prevented me achieving the 10 day finish I desperately wanted.”

Anne received this Trophy by the event organizers with the term “Doyenne” which translates from French to “the most respected or prominent woman in a particular field”.

The Power of Support

What gets one through a race like Race Across France, the daunting combination of long days and even longer nights, with only you and your bike propelling towards a finish line seemingly distant and elusive?

A crucial element that sustained Anne’s spirit and propelled her forward was the support from friends and family. As the kilometers stretched endlessly before her, thoughts of them occupied her mind, keeping her mental space sound.

“I wish they knew how much I think about them during my rides, how much I wish they could share it somehow with me and how much I love them. One call from any of them, keeps me going for hundreds of kilometres.”

Inspiring us!

Anne’s incredible undertaking in the Race Across France serves as an awe-inspiring example to any woman who followed her journey. Her determination, resilience, and unwavering spirit demonstrate the heights that can be reached when one dares to dream big and push the boundaries of possibility.

By fearlessly taking on this formidable challenge, Anne’s journey not only inspires aspiring female cyclists but also empowers women from all walks of life to pursue their passions relentlessly. Anne Blewett stands as a beacon of inspiration, reminding us all that with grit, determination, and unwavering support from loved ones, there are no limits to what we can achieve.

“Mountains no longer scare me, they are just bumps in the road, a few hours to get to the top and a few hours to get to the bottom.”
